It was a pleasure to once again be a guest with Tom Rosenbauer on the Orvis Fly Fishing Podcast. Way back in 2019, Tom and I talked about streamers. In 2023, we talked about the Mono Rig. This time, Tom and I talked about split shot.
As always, it was a great conversation with Tom. We acknowledged the advantages of using split shot. We spoke of drift quality, shot placement and how to purposely use weight for different effects. We also talked about the disadvantages of split shot, both perceived and real. Split shot does not slide if it’s used properly. And split shot is easily applied and removed with the right shot and the right process. Freedom is provided to a fly when the weight is in the shot and not the pattern itself, but that also comes with some loss of strike detection. So Tom and I worked through strategies to mitigate that deficiency.

I hope you enjoy it.
