Fishing is a story . . . Every summer I fish dry flies more than anything else. This year, without really planning on it, that’s all I’ve fished. I haven’t touched a nymph or a streamer for about two months now. It’s been dry fly or die.

Summers are my off season from guiding, but life gets complicated. There’s all the branches of the Troutbitten Project to keep up with, and rest of life creeps in too. It all gets mixed together. It get’s too cluttered. And maybe simplifying my flies and tactics is a response to all that.

I am starting to miss the underwater game. I like being dry or die, but other thoughts are starting to creep in. Not yet, though. For now, I’ll keep testing big flies and putting them up against my tried and true Parachute Ant. I almost feel like crowing my fishing pack with nymphs and streamers will mean summer’s over. And I’m not yet ready for that . . .

Seeing the fly is one of the most enjoyable aspects of fishing. But there’s a world of education inherent, too. Watch the fly dance and fall as it mixes with the currents. Notice how it responds to rod tip animation and line strips. Then see a trout materialize around the fly and judge its reaction. Visible flies are teachers. Whether dries, wets, nymphs or streamers, watching the fly helps us refine the techniques that catch fish.

    Dry or Die – this was a great video/story. I loved it. This may be because I have a picture on my wall that says, “Jesus Christ is a Dry Fly Angler”. I bought this in MT at Rosebud Fly Shop. I myself have fallen and use nymphs or whatever will catch me a fish – just ask the guide I had on The Snake River in ID – Big Gulp Minnow.

    If you want me to listen, talk about fishing.
