Stop Stocking Over Wild Trout

Stop stocking over wild trout. This simple statement has been our conversation message from the beginning. Take a stand for what you love, for the woods and the water, for wild places and wild experiences.

Rain-X As A Pre-Treatment

I apply Rain-X to all dry flies that leave my vise, if they don’t have CDC. I do the same with my yarn indicators. A simple drop of Rain-X dries completely in a few hours, leaving behind an unseen film of silicone that goes a long way to waterproofing materials for the river. I’m surprised more anglers don’t know about this. And no, Rain-X is not toxic after it dries.

VIDEO: Mono Rig Mods — All the Adjustment for a Versatile, Hybrid System

My friends and I don’t go fishing with our mind set on a certain tactic. We let the trout make those decisions, and we’re ready for anything. The Troutbitten Standard Mono Rig is the perfect tool for such an approach.

. . . It’s a versatile tool. It’s a hybrid system. And to maximize those options, simple adjustments are necessary. This video shows those adjustments in detail . . .

(VIDEO) Landing Net Repair and Bag Replacement – Fishing Net Fix

If you’re landing net is in need of repair, good for you. That means you’ve probably fished a lot. Sometimes the net bag can be repaired. Other times the bag needs to be replaced. Both are covered in this video, along with the parts list for string choices, the needle and the net bag.

PODCAST: Dry Fly Platforms – The Outliers and The Wrap Up – The Troutbitten Fly Box (S18, Ep7)

This Troutbitten Skills Series and these platforms are an effort to pass along the idea that fly selection doesn’t have to be regimented or complicated. Instead, see flies for what they have in common. Find their similarities rather than their differences. Choose the elements that matter most to you. Find the components of a fly that create enough of a distinction to be the keys to a platform, and build around that idea.

(VIDEO) Troutbitten Fly Box: Fur Nymphs – Walt’s Worm as a Platform, Blending Dubbing and More

Buggy flies, guide flies, confidence flies: Fur nymphs are all of that. A fur nymph looks alive, and it’s not overdone. It’s just fur on a hook. These flies aren’t very exciting to look at. The material list is slim. And there’s not much to know about tying them. Anglers may be bored with the spartan form, but trout respond to the simplicity. And there’s a lot of inherent attraction in a fur nymph, with very little to turn a trout off.

PODCAST: Dry Fly Platforms – Hoppers, Stones and Foams- The Troutbitten Fly Box (S18, Ep6)

It’s time for the big-meal dry fly platform: hoppers and stoneflies. With this platform, we substitute subtlety for buoyancy. Hackle is traded in for rubber legs, and dubbing is often replaced by closed-cell foam. In this episode, we break down this big-meal platform. We’ll look at a parts list, cover some pros and cons about material choices, and look at the particulars of the platform itself.

Why and When | Drop Shot Nymphing on a Tight Line Rig — Pt.2

Why and When | Drop Shot Nymphing on a Tight Line Rig — Pt.2

Drop shot nymphing on a tight line system puts the angler in control of every part of the drift. By using the riverbed as a reference, you then choose the speed, level and lane-travel of the flies.

That control is a double-edged sword. While the benefits of contact and control are infinite, there is a downside — you must get everything just right. Ultimate control is a big responsibility. And in many ways, it’s easier to choose a pair of light nymphs with no shot and simply track the nymph’s progress downstream, letting the river make all the important decisions.

Learning and refining that presentation is a daily challenge. . . .

RIVERSIDE (Video): Find Fish, Feed Fish, Fight Fish — The Order of Everything

A lot goes into a good fishing trip. It’s a flexible framework of pieces and parts mixed in with a little fortuitous intuition. That first trout to the net is rarely luck. And when you start to lose count of how many fish have come to hand, you can be sure that luck has had very little to do with it.

The overarching principles of how to catch a trout — the headers of the outline — are these: Find Trout, Don’t spook them, have a solid presentation, choose a reasonable pattern, and fight fish fast . . .

PODCAST: Dry Fly Platforms – Emergers – The Troutbitten Fly Box (S18, Ep5)

PODCAST: Dry Fly Platforms – Emergers – The Troutbitten Fly Box (S18, Ep5)

A dry fly emerger is one that has part of the fly underneath the surface. It’s a highly effective form (meaning tout eat it) because it matches the most vulnerable state of things that trout see.

In this episode we cover the dry fly platform of emergers. We look at what they are, how and why to use them and the differences in styles within this platform. We cover some history about how emerger design got to this point and what the future might hold.
