How do you get deeper into the game? Is it a choice or just good fortune? We live a life on the water, and a couple of episodes ago we talked about burnout — how a lot of anglers dig in, fish hard, go all out for a few years, and then just fade away. That’s the end point for some people, but tonight we’re here to talk about the beginning. We want to consider the start of a fishing life, or more accurately, the start of a dedicated fishing life. Most people who become serious anglers have some fishing experiences for a while, and then for whatever reason, the whole thing just becomes . . . more.

All of the Troutbitten crew that you already has made fishing our lives for a very long time. And we can give you our opinions and experiences on this whole thing. But for a newer, fresher perspective, we invited some friends who are a little younger in the game. Both of these guys fished off and on since they were kids, but something triggered them to go deeper. That’s process is more recent for them than it is for us, so we wanted to hear from them.

Meet our good friends Anthony Marrazo and Andy McDonald, who join me with Austin Dando and Bill Dell.

Hi. I’m a father of two young boys, a husband, author, fly fishing guide and a musician. I fish for wild brown trout in the cool limestone waters of Central Pennsylvania year round. This is my home, and I love it. Friends. Family. And the river.

  1. My change happened over a few short seasons. My friend and fishing buddy and the person that introduced me to fly fishing wanted to follow his old love of music. No arguments here but my place to crash (his house) was less available as well.

I started staying at motels near where I like to fish but needed to use guides to get to the water I wanted to fish. I was considering buying something but homeownership has its own commitments and I wanted to fish. A guide suggested getting an RV and a different guide suggested a specific campground to park it.

I had to ‘interview’ for the space and my world of dry fly fishing opened in a way I never expected and a new dawn of fishing and friendships began.

This was no ordinary RV campground. Seasoned hunters and fisherman and mostly all committed to fishing on top. I signed on 4 years ago and the rest as they say is history.

RV camping life isn’t for everyone. My wife isn’t the biggest fan but recognizes the joy it provides me. I’m situated facing the river and can access all parts depending on my whim and I don’t have to rely on a guide or availability of rooms. To say my life transformed may be pushing it but my fishing life sure did.
