Troutbitten HV Crossover Thin Leader

The HV Thin Crossover solves a few problems and offers unique presentations within a tight line system. It’s perfect for the Crossover Technique with streamers and nymphs. And it’s great all-around leader when you need extra distance with less leader sag, while still preserving power, accuracy and casting feel. The mid-range butt section provides a chance to hover streamers and nymphs around structure, at longer distances, with enhanced sensitivity, and it still has enough mass to cast like a fly line. Originally built for fishing streamers on the Mono Rig, the HV Thin Crossover is an excellent hybrid leader for pure tight lining nymphs, for dry dropper and for indicator work.

How Big of an Ask?

Are trout opportunistic feeders? Sure, but it depends on the opportunity. We choose the fly and decide how to present it. We then pick what water will receive the cast. And to inform those decisions, it’s critical to understand what we’re asking the trout to do. How...

DIY – Bar Boots

I burn through boot soles fast. And cheap boots with poor foot support are a bad idea when you're wading heavy runs and putting full days on the water with lots of hiking, so I was spending about $150 every ten months on a new pair of boots. I used to resole my own...

Fall Camping Trip | 2014

My Dad got a new camper and he set up two fall trips, this being the first one.  So, my uncle joined him for the whole trip and I joined them on Monday and Tuesday. We fished the first upper island on Monday and the fishing was ok. I played guide a little bit and...

Efficiency: Part 2 – Leader/Tippet Changes

My best days on the water are usually full of changes. The morning fog burns off, and I switch from streamers to nymphs; a half hour later, a swirling back eddy looks like the home of the next nameable brown trout (two footer), and I go back to...

New Structure | Old Structure

One of my favorite places in the world is a deeply shaded valley that runs north and south between two towering mountains of mixed hardwoods. The forest floor has enough conifers mixed in to block much of the sunlight, even in the winter. The ferns of spring grow...
