Small streams provide unique challenges to the fly angler. The canopy and close quarters of a stream no wider than the dirt road you drove in on teaches everything you need to know about good fly casting. In the brush, there is no forgiveness for poor form. The leader design must suit the moment. Here is the small stream leader I’ve used for over two decades to chase wild trout in mountain streams and tight quarters.

It’s seven-feet long, and it’s an adaptation of a Charlie Meck design.

The Troutbitten Small Stream leader provides excellent control to cast through the brush and achieve great dead drifts on the dry fly. It’s tailor made for precision dry fly fishing in the brush, and it’s versatile enough to fish other styles. For me, this is the perfect small stream leader, and it’s been with me for a very long time.
