Dry flies need slack, so give it to them. This hand-tied Harvey leader is designed to land in s-curves throughout the leader. Flies without slack drag immediately, and most trout refuse a dragging fly. So providing s-curves with accuracy is the key to dry fly fishing.

The Troutbitten Harvey Dry Leader is a different tool than the standard extruded leaders found in fly shops.

This is my favorite dry fly leader, with minor adaptations to George Harvey’s original design. The Harvey Dry Leader has enough power to turn over large flies. It also excels at remarkably subtle, delicate presentations with the smallest flies.

This leader finishes with 5X nylon tippet. Onstream adjustments of the terminal tippet to match the fly are needed and expected.

Stop Looking at Your Backcast

Looking away from your target is the surest way to miss it. Think about that. Whether you’re shooting a bullet, an Adams dry fly or a basketball, staring down your mark is the first order of business. An intense focus on one point, one objective, gives your brain the...

Eat a Trout Once in a While

I stood next to him on the bank, and I watched my uncle kneel in the cold riffle. Water nearly crested the tops of his hip waders while he adjusted and settled next to the flat sandstone rock that lay between us. He pulled out the Case pocket knife again, as he’d done...

I’ve lived, and I’ve left some good things here . . . that is enough

His mother called him “Will,” because “William” was too big of a name for a small boy. But when his father needed to make a strong point, he was called “William.” On a large tract of farmland, stretched along a rocky shelf high above the river, Will and his brother...

Streamer Presentations — Quick or Smooth?

A few years ago, Bill Dell and I floated a favorite river from dawn to dusk. It was one of those great days with a friend, with no pressure to put fish in the net and nothing to prove. Everyone wants a fishing friend like Bill. Both of us are dedicated to catching the...

The Pulley Retrieve (with VIDEO)

** NOTE ** A video for the Pulley Retrieve appears below. Recover more line, and recover it smoother. Why not, right? Sounds good. Last week my friend, Mark, stood calf-deep and fifteen feet off the bank, at the back end of the tailout. Early winter flows were running...

Perfect Peace

Everything was too loud this week. Sometimes it feels like I wasn't built to be around people, and the simple interactions with others, even with my own family, stack and pile on top of me. My jumbled thoughts and endless worry needed to go away for a while, and I've...
