The “plop” of a bead head nymph on a dry-dropper rig, or from a properly weighted terrestrial pattern can produce an amazing lateral line response from big brown trout, drawing them from fairly long distances. I’ve watched trout form a wake as they charge to eat my fly in response to that perfect “plop”. When they’re in the right mood this is a very powerful tactic and a fantastic visual experience.
