Presenting the Mono Rig at Seneca Trout Unlimited

by | May 30, 2017 | 0 comments

On Tuesday, June 13 at 6:30 pm I’m presenting “The Mono Rig: Your flies, your fly rod, no fly line” for Seneca Trout Unlimited of Pennsylvania.

Tuesday, June 13 @6:30 pm
St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church
116 E Arnold Ave, Port Allegany, Pennsylvania 16743

This is the presentation that defines the Mono Rig — a full system for both tight line and indicator nymphing styles, and for streamers and dry flies, all while using #20 monofilament as a fly line substitute.

As tight line and euro nymphing styles become more popular, they are surrounded by confusion. The Mono Rig is a versatile system that is fished with most any rod and with the flies most anglers already have in their box. It’s a system for fishing nymphs, small and large streamers, and dry/dropper styles — with and without indicators — with and without split shot. The variations are up to the angler.

The first half of the presentation is an introduction to the Mono Rig, where 20# monofilament functions as a substitutes for traditional fly line. Control, contact and strike detection are all dramatically improved by taking away the weight and sag of fly line. Topics include: history, similarities and differences with tight line and euro nymphing methods, leader design and fly line alternatives.

The second half of the presentation covers tactics for fishing nymphs, streamers, and dry/dropper on the Mono Rig. Topics include: rigging and casting, weight options, tips for getting a true dead drift, streamer fishing with the long leader, suspender types, long and short range uses, limitations and versatility.

I hope you’ll join us for an evening on the Allegheny Plateau of Pennsylvania. Make a day of it. Discover some of the excellent trout waters in the area. Better yet, make two days of it.

PODCAST: Angler Pressure ONE: What It Does to the Fish — S7, Ep1

Season 7 of begins with a two-part discussion on angler pressure. This is a big one. It’s a topic that everyone in the fishing world loves to talk about. People complain about angler pressure, and they have theories about how it changes things.

In this episode, we discuss how angler pressure affects the fish. And for the next episode, the topic will be how angler pressure affects the fishing. One topic sets up a good conversation of the other.

Troutbitten On the Orvis Fly Fishing Podcast — Talking About the Mono Rig

It was an honor to once again be a guest with Tom Rosenbauer on the Orvis Fly Fishing Podcast. Back in 2019, Tom and I talked about streamers. This time, Tom asked for a breakdown on the Mono Rig.

It was a fun conversation. Tom and I went deep into the long leaders tactics. We talked about the history, expectations, limitations and misunderstandings regarding the Mono Rig.

Season Seven will begin on April 10th. But in between seasons, I want to catch you up on a few things that are going on with Troutbitten.

Just a few years ago, Troutbitten was the website only. I wrote and published articles three times a week. Now it’s a multi-media company with many branches — there’s the podcast, the videos, the online shop, hosted events and, of course, the guide business.

Here’s what’s going on in the Troutbitten world . . .

PODCAST: Winter Skills Series, #8: Full Crew Conversation — S6, Ep8

Here we are at the end of Season 6 — the Troutbitten Winter Skills Series. This is episode 8 of the series, with a full crew of friends to wrap things up, to hear some stories and dig into a few more tips for fly fishing in the winter months.

This is a great conversation with my best fishing friends. And this discussion is a nice endcap on a full season dedicated to fly fishing in the winter months.
